She's a Survivor

Every project we do is as special as the person behind it and Jeni’s story is no different. In 2016, following the Great Flood of Baton Rouge, we were contacted by Jeni to help rebuild her home, which withstood 7 feet of water. The street was lined with debris and she stood before me with a big smile on her face excited to have AJM in her neighborhood. I was flattered yet very confused due to the fact as I scanned her home not much could be saved. As I looked down at Jeni (because she was about a foot shorter than me) she said “Anicka, I told myself if I ever had the money I would have you redo my house.” At that moment I knew in my heart we were sent to be a blessing and would need to do whatever it took to bring Jeni and her family back to a beautiful and safe home.

Hand in hand, we settled her insurance claim and put together a design plan for her soon-to-be dream home. Jeni shared she loved cooking and hoped to one day own a restaurant so an improved kitchen layout was at the top of the list. As a single mom working 2 jobs and raising 3 boys she also needed her own retreat. We combined two small bedrooms to create a master suite with a walk in closet. The earthy tone on tone color palette was inspired by Jeni’s favorite color green. We didn’t have a huge budget but we were able to fit it all, including central air and heat!

Attending design sessions wasn’t easy for Jeni as she was also battling breast cancer for the second time, another Goliath that stood before her. In spite of it all, Jeni continued to push through with a smile, all while undergoing aggressive chemo treatments and living in a one room hotel with her family of 8. Throughout this journey Jeni’s strength, and more importantly positive attitude, was admirable. Instead of allowing life’s adversities to wear her down she let them give her a reason to smile. Three years later we are just releasing Jeni’s story because at the time her story was still being written. In July 2019, I received the phone call we have all been praying for. After a long 8-year battle with breast cancer, Jeni can finally share the good news - she is CANCER FREE and still loving her home!
